Investigators often have to make assumptions during an investigation in order to narrow down leads and keep things moving forward. However, making assumptions based on bias, runs the risk of leading the investigation in the wrong direction. This is one of those cases. In fact, if the killer hadn’t tried so hard to misdirect investigators that never even looked in their direction, they probably would have gotten away with the crime altogether.
